Decorating Cakes – Icing Nozzles

Firstly, apologies for the quality of the icing in some of these pics, the icing had been in the fridge and I did not have time to wait until it warmed up.

When I was first trying to work out which nozzles to use I could not find much information on the internet so I thought I would do some pictures of nozzles and show how they ice.

Nozzle 1

I am afraid I never know what the nozzles are called and more often than not I buy them from ebay or car boot sales! The Hello Kitty cupcake is an example of a cake I iced with this nozzle using 2 tone icing.

Nozzle 2

Nozzle 3

icing nozzlesicing nozzlesThis again is one of my favourites. As I said above, the icing I used today was cold from the fridge and so the edges are broken, however with this nozzle the broken edges can look veryattractive particularly when doing 2 tone icing.  Here is an example of a cupcake iced using this nozzle.

Nozzle 4

icing nozzlesicing nozzlesThis is a basic cheap star nozzle that I have in 4 sizes and is the most versatile of all of the nozzles and ideal for peanut butter icing as the chunks of peanut butter do not clog the nozzle. The green iced cupcakes were done using this nozzle.

Nozzle 5

Nozzle 6

icing nozzlesThis is a nozzle I do not use a great deal, it is a star with slightly curved points. It is one I will probably experiment with over the next few weeks as I have now dug it out!

I, of course, use many different nozzles and will do a further post in time about the rest.  If you have experimented with icing nozzles following my tutorials then do please send your pictures to me plus a bit about your experimentation with icing nozzles and I will write a follow up post about all of your experiments.

In the meantime if you would like to have some of my delicious cakes why not order cakes or cupcakes from our online shop.

Thankyou so much your site is brilliant I’ve recently bought some plastic nozzles, as I’m a beginner with cupcakes and have no idea what effect each nozzle has or if plastic nozzles are as good as metal, but your site has answered so many questions. Thankyou brilliant website :)

    Gill,
I stumbled across your website yesterday and I must have spent about 6 hours on it already! You should be congratulated on such an excellent site, it far exceeds the standard of most sites I have come across so far and this is so refreshing. Anyway, I felt that your generosity in sharing ideas, tips etc deserved something in return so I am going to share my exciting news of the day with you ;-) As some people have said, finding the correct nozzles to create the designs you want can be a right pain and I so wanted to create your rose piping after watching the tutorial. I have trawled through many sites over the last 24 hours but nearing madness I by chance came across a picture and immediately recognised the illusive nozzle. Your nozzles 1, 2 and 6 are part of the ‘Lakeland’ icing set!! Here is the link http://www.lakeland.co.uk/2233/Professional-Piping-Set;jsessionid=3777A6BBF5B2FBC42FFE9A3A7528F610.app1
I have been and purchased it today and just finished a batch of cupcakes and achieved the rose piping, yeeaahhh. I used your two tone icing tip too and I am thrilled with my first attempt. I would love to send you a picture if you are interested and have time to look. You deserve to be very successful :-)

Thank you for your lovely comments. I started giving out hints and tips because when I started out I just could not find easily the info I needed and so I am really glad it has been useful to you. I would love to see what you created so do please email me your pictures and I will write up a follow-up post to show what you achieved. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi,

I stumbled across ur website and am fascinated…superb job…I am still an ametuer in baking..I love it though… I am looking for such nozzles (like the ones you have shown in pics.) Tried so many websites and stores..but no one is there to guide me. I keep learning everytime I bake a new thing. The experience is just lovely. Would love to hear from you. Happy Baking :D

Thank you for that very useful insight into what icing looks like using different nozzles. You are very skilled at decorating the cakes and, having had a go myself, I can say it is harder than it looks!
